Delhi forcing us to intensify agitation: Geelani

Issues 10-Day Protest Program

ARIF SHAFI WANI

Srinagar, Oct 15: Maintaining that New Delhi's silence on his five demands was forcing Kashmiris to intensify their ongoing agitation, the Chairman of Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday announced another 10-day protest calendar.
The calendar from October 17 to October 26 comprises of 'Chalos' to Palhalan and Bijbehara and relaxation on three days including Sundays.
Geelani, who is spearheading the ongoing 'Quit Jammu and

Kashmir Movement' said the Hurriyat had with "utmost honesty" left no stone unturned to improve the situation in the Valley.
"For making the situation conducive we had put forward five demands before the Government of India. But despite passing of 45 days, there has been no realistic response. By maintaining a silence, New Delhi has signified that it is not serious to improve situation in Kashmir. We can't wait longer for New Delhi's response especially at a time when the lives of Kashmiris are at stake," Geelani said.
Geelani said due to unflinching sacrifices and resilience of Kashmiris, the movement has reached a crucial juncture. "October and November have been tragic in the history of Kashmir dispute. During these months, over six lakh Muslims were massacred and over 10 lakh forced to migrate out of the State. On October 27th, 1947, India sent its troopers to Kashmir without any justification. Since then India continues to hold Kashmir by its military might," he said.
Geelani said the sacrifices of Kashmiris has put the dispute to the centre-stage of international community. "At this juncture it is the responsibility of Kashmiris to make October 27 and the bloody massacre in November as base and intensify the ongoing agitation to impress upon the international community that we won't at any cost accept India's forced rule. We want to maintain that unless the dispute is resolved according to the aspirations of Kashmiris, there will not be any improvement in situation in the State and peace will continue to elude South Asia," Geelani said.
The Hurriyat Chairman said the stiff resistance by Kashmiris has blocked New Delhi's escape routes.
"But the pro-India leaders in the State are leaving no stone unturned to repeat the historic blunders by executing India's policies to suppress the aspirations of Kashmiris. It is high time for India to gauge the mood of our younger generation and gives the right to self-determination to Kashmiris without further delay," he said.
Geelani said conspiracies have been hatched to sabotage the ongoing agitation. "Our peaceful agitation is giving sleepless nights to pro-India leaders. They have started to activate their agents for suppressing our programs. We are monitoring the activities of these agents and will soon unmask them," he said.
Geelani made a fervent appeal to people to make the conglomerate's protest calendar successful. "People should take full advantage of relaxations and store the essential items and medicines to minimize inconvenience. From the core of my heart I appreciate support to the movement especially by shopkeepers, traders, transporters and laborers. At this juncture we have to remain united to achieve our goal," he said.
According to the calendar, there will be no strike on Sunday, October 17. The conglomerate has called for a complete shutdown on Monday, October 18, and urged people to march to Palhalan Pattan to express sympathy with the relatives of four youth killed by troopers there last month. "After these killings, people of Palhalan Pattan are continuously reeling under curfew. People should also express sympathy with them," Geelani said.
On Tuesday, October 19, the conglomerate has again called for shutdown and urged people to offer congregational Zuhr prayers at their respective Tehsil and district headquarters. It also asked the people to stage peaceful sit-in after the prayers. There will be no shutdown on Wednesday, October 20.
On Thursday, October 21, there will be shutdown and people have been urged to stage protests against the arrest spree in the Valley. "On this day, the biggest congregation will be held at Ghanta Ghar Lal Chowk where the Hurriyat leadership will address the people," it said.
On Friday, October 22, the conglomerate has called for a shutdown and Bijbehara Chalo to mark the massacre of 52 people in 1993 there.
Geelani urged the people to observe Saturday, October 23, as Women's Protection day. "There will be complete shutdown and people should stage sit-in on roads and throw light on problems faced by the Kashmiri women," it said.
There will be no shutdown on Sunday, October 24. The conglomerate asked the people to observe shutdown on Monday, October 25. "On this day, people should take to streets, cover their mouth with white cloth and stage silent protest against the atrocities unleashed by the troopers."
As a tribute to the 110 civilians killed during the past four months, the conglomerate urged the people to observe Tuesday, October 26, as Martyrs Day. "There will be complete shutdown and foundation stone of wall of resistance will be laid at Martyrs Graveyard Eidgah."
The conglomerate said there will be relaxation from sunset to sunrise during these days.
