Taken almost half a century ago, photos of the Cuba mía exhibition are shown at the Havana's National Fine Arts Museum throughout this summer. The shots were taken by Mexican Rodrigo Moya –born in Colombia in 1935 and later on naturalized Mexican- during his first trip to Cuba in 1964. Four weeks of endless work, thousands of emotions and especially unique printings of the social change promoted by the 1959 Cuban Revolution, leave the long-stored old negatives to come to life in new printings. This tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of the Revolution is the testimony of the people that made it possible and its leaders, and the testimony of the power of the social change. Each of the photos reflects the artist's encounter with unexpected events. "Sentimentalism and ideology, neglected by the most experimented photographers as selected factors of the image, are in my case the components that select subjects and circumstances", the artist said. Of a journalistic and illustrated nature, the photos show the happiness and heroic scenario of the time. They illustrate the expressions of popular support during big demonstrations; the endless work in factories; the determination to achieve a collective progress and the daily life in rural and urban areas. They also portrait musicians and festivities; the celebration for the July 26th commemoration in the Santiago de Cuba province and productive actions. The 80 shots are the result of the initial idea to publish, with essential images, the book entitled Cuba por tres, with texts, caricatures and photos of the social change, its people and the Cubans' life. However, this purpose was frustrated after the sudden death of Monny de Swaan, a rich pro-socialist trader who financed the project. A version of that project is exhibited for the first time in Havana and it's expected to be shown in Mexico in the 2010. It impresses the romantic light of teaching classrooms in the mountains, as well as the shades that highlight the prominent role of young leaders such as Fidel and Raúl, Vilma Espín and Che Guevara, from whom Moya keeps almost 400 shots. Immersed in the spontaneity and enthusiasm of the first revolutionary five-year period, the hopeful faces of humble people and the importance of each of the historic events are skillfully and artistically documented. Like the photos of Alberto Korda, a press photographer from 1959 to 1968, Osvaldo Salas, Raúl Corrales, Ernesto Fernández, Chinolope and others, Rodrigo Moya's work is a unique testimony. His images show his great creativeness and reaffirm some of the elements that compose the 1960's Cuban photographic iconography. Rodrigo Moya has taken part in countless exhibitions in Mexico and abroad. He was granted the Distinction for the National Culture by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cuba, among other awards obtained for his photographic work.
